Evil Eye Collection

The Evil Eye: Whether you believe in this ancient curse or not, it’s quickly gained traction in the fashion industry. Many cultures have used a variety of protective talismans and amulets to ward off this curse for centuries. Perhaps one of the most unique and modernized interpretations of these talismans is Valliyan’s Evil Eye jewelry collection.

But first, what exactly is the meaning behind the evil eye symbol?

Evil Eye Meaning: One Wrong Look

While belief in the evil eye spans many cultures and varies from each one to the next, the general belief is that evil can be cast with a simple glance, and can be either intentional or accidental.

Written record of the evil eye dates back at least 5,000 years to the Sumerians of the Euphrates Valley, who left behind a clay tablet inscribed with a prayer to ward off the curse. Cave drawings 10,000 years old depicting symbols to ward off the evil eye have also been discovered in Spain, suggesting that even prehistoric humans may have believed in this curse.

So how did this belief in the evil eye come to be? According to University of California-Berkeley anthropologist and folklore expert Alan Dundes, it stems from the fear of envy prevalent in certain cultures. In other words, one who is successful may invite admiring looks or flattering words that could trigger bad luck and disaster.

“The basic root of the evil eye is the notion of a limited good most common in peasant societies,” Dundes explained. “If there’s not enough of a good thing and if you praise someone or something, it means you want what they have.”

Evil Eye Protection Jewelry

Attempts to ward off the curse of the evil eye have resulted in various types of talismans, often in the form of amulets and jewelry resembling eyes, across cultures. These protective charms and cures have also come to be known as evil eyes, and are meant to turn away or turn back harm. In some cultures, the talismans are actually intended to reflect the malicious gaze, and thereby the evil intent, back to the onlooker.
