Jewelry and accessories are a vital part of any ensemble, and no one likes to sacrifice style simply because they are traveling. But the question is how to travel with jewelry safely and efficiently. The key is planning according to your destination, outfits, and, of course, which jewelry you can and cannot live without.

Below, find our favorite tips and tricks that will make traveling with jewelry a breeze, no matter where in the world you’re headed!

Consider What Jewelry to Bring

New York Skyline Ring by MirakinFirst of all, you want to travel as light as possible while remaining as stylish as possible. When picking your jewelry for travel, select versatile pieces that can be easily mixed and matched with your planned outfits. Try to keep it to just a few key baubles so as not to weigh your luggage down.

A few types of pieces that travel well include:

  • Chunky necklaces that are less likely to get tangled.
  • Rings and bangles because they are also tangle-resistant.
  • Any other type of solid accessories that won’t get tangled and therefore, won’t get damaged.

And if you are debating about packing an irreplaceable jewel you know you know you would be heartbroken to lose, leave it at home. At least this way, you’ll know it will be waiting safely for you upon your return.

How to Pack Jewelry

Orchid Earrings by ValliyanWe recommend a hard jewelry case as it offers more protection. There are many high-quality hard travel cases available. They typically feature a micro-fiber interior with various compartments to keep your jewelry safe and tangle-free.

A silk jewelry roll is another great option. If you go this route, however, pack it tightly among your clothes or other items so that it doesn’t get bounced around. This will help prevent any damage to your jewelry.

While traveling to tropical climates is fantastic, the humidity can be very harmful to your precious jewelry. Throw a few anti-tarnish strips if you are traveling to a humid destination to prevent any unwanted metal discoloration.

Our Favorite Jewelry Packing Tricks

Certain types of jewelry, such as necklaces and small earrings, can be a hassle to travel with because they can get tangled and lost in the abyss of your bag. Below are a few of our favorite tips we’ve seen to keep your jewelry secure.

The Necklace Straw

This trick is great for necklaces with long, fine chains. Simply thread one side of the chain through the straw and clasp it. Although this will take up a bit more space in your bag, it will prevent entanglement and potential damage. Don’t worry, you can be eco-friendly with this one by using reusable plastic straws!

Necklaces in Plastic Bags

Another great tip for packing your pesky necklaces, all you need for this is one small Ziplock bag per necklace. Let the clasp hang slightly out of the bag and seal it shut. The necklace won’t budge or tangle!

Jewelry Roll

There are two different options when it comes to the jewelry roll. We mentioned a silk jewelry roll above, which usually features several small zippered compartments and one large open one. One option is to slip your necklaces in the largest compartment keeping them straight, then roll the silk roll tightly closed.

You can also opt for a DIY jewelry roll using a towel for necklaces and/or bracelets. Simply lay necklaces out flat on the towel, then roll it up securely (this can even work for flexible chokers). You can then slide bangles and cuffs over the towel roll to be held in place. Finally, slip the roll into a Ziplock bag to make sure nothing slips away.

Button Method for Earrings

You’ve probably heard of this tip before. All you have to do is insert an earring through each buttonhole, which will ensure they stay together. This tip is great for smaller earrings that you’ll be packing in a tightly secured jewelry case.

Cardboard Method for earrings

If you’re traveling with larger earrings—or a higher quantity of them—you can easily use a stiff piece of cardboard from something like a shoebox to hold them all in place. Use a pen tip or pin to poke holes through the cardboard, then insert your earrings through each hole. Store the entire piece of cardboard in a plastic bag to ensure no earrings take off on their own.

This one takes up more space in your luggage, but it is your best bet if you are an avid wearer of statement earrings.

Keeping Your Jewelry Safe While Traveling

traveling with jewelryWe love these suggestions by Kiersten of The Blonde Abroad for keeping your jewelry extra safe while you’re roaming the world.

  • Write down a list of all the jewelry you bring and make two copies: one to leave at home and one to take with you. Take a video or photo of the jewelry you’re traveling with, too.
  • Pack your jewelry in your carry on or wear it if possible. Try to avoid putting in your checked luggage. If you have expensive or flashy pieces with stones, hide them (turn your ring so only the band shows or hide your necklace in your shirt).
  • Don’t leave your jewelry unattended or unsecured. Keep it with you and use the hotel safe when you’re not wearing it.
  • Consider jewelry insurance if you do travel with valuable, precious jewelry.

So you see, it is possible to remain efficient and fashionable when it comes to traveling with jewelry! Follow these tips, plan out your ensembles, and you’ll look fabulous all vacation long.
